LYNWOOD >> A man and a woman were killed Monday moing when their vehicle drove off the 710 Freeway and struck a tree in Lynwood, authorities said.
The crash was reported at 4:42 a.m. off the northbound 710 Freeway just south of Imperial Highway, said Califoia Highway Patrol Officer Stephan Brandt.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, Brandt said. Firefighters were working to extricate the bodies from the vehicle.
An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the crash, he said.

MONTEREY PARK >> A memorial service for Mexican music superstar Juan Gabriel is scheduled for Tuesday at a Catholic Church in Monterey Park.
The service is set for 5 to 9 p.m. at St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Church, 320 W. Garvey Ave.
Gabriel, 66, whose inteational popularity spaed multiple generations, died of a heart attack Aug. 27 at his home in Santa Monica.
He was known for his powerful ballads and a commanding stage presence punctuated by often-flamboyant costumes.
His death came less than three days after he performed a two-hour set at the Los Angeles Forum as part of his sold-out “MeXXico Es Todo Tour.”
Gabriel, whose real name was Alberto Aquilera Valadez, wrote more than 1,500 songs that combined mariachi, ranchero and norteno. He sold more than 100 million copies worldwide in a career dating back to the 1970s.
The six-time Grammy nominee was inducted into the Billboard Latin Music Hall of Fame in 1996, was named the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year in 1995 and in 2ادامه مطلب

NORFOLK, Va. >> Hermine continued Monday to twist hundreds of miles off shore in the Atlantic Ocean and was expected to keep swimmers and surfers out of beach waters because of its dangerous waves and rip currents on the last day of the long holiday weekend.
“We’re not looking at a landfall,” said Deis Feltgen of the National Hurricane Center on Sunday, adding Hermine is just sitting and pushing the water up along the coast making storm surge a great conce.
It was expected to stall over the water before weakening again.
Goveors all along the Easte Seaboard aounced emergency preparations. A tropical storm waing was in effect from New York’s Long Island to Massachusetts.
Tropical storm-force winds were possible Monday in New Jersey. Gov. Chris Christie waed that minor to moderate flooding was still likely in coastal areas and said the storm will cause major problems, even as it tracks away from land.

Carson Mayor Albert Robles, who is defiantly seeking election to two offices that the District Attoey’s Office says he can’t hold simultaneously, is embroiled in a web of new lawsuits related to the November election.
Robles, a defense attoey, faces only former City Clerk Jim Dear in his bid for his first full term as Carson mayor, but has four challengers in the race for his longtime seat representing a larger region at the Water Replenishment District of Southe Califoia, an agency that manages groundwater. Both elections are Nov. 8.
Most of the suits involve challenges to the three-word ballot designations chosen by the candidates to describe who they are, which can be crucial in deciding elections to obscure offices because voters know so little about them.
Last week, a judge ruled against Robles in ballot description challenges he brought in late August against two opponents and one who is ruing against a fellow water official. But he was victorious in court against ادامه مطلب

The sound of applause has scarcely died down in the Capitol after last week’s vote to significantly expand Califoia’s requirements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Proponents who steered the groundbreaking legislation are still basking in the afterglow of an effort that—after seeming on the brink of defeat—deftly mustered unexpected support and reaffirmed the state’s inteational leadership on climate change.
But such is the unsentimentality of politics: Someone has to pop the pretty balloons and sweep up the confetti.
For all that was achieved by the passage of SB 32—extending the original 2006 law and setting a new target of reducing statewide emissions to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030—the titanic legislative struggle could not fully mask some waing signs about the ultimate prospects of achieving the state’s lofty ambitions.

STINSON BEACH >> The sleek, flapping salmon that fishermen hauled aboard the rolling Salty Lady charter boat near the Golden Gate Bridge were the survivors of the survivors.
After five years of drought, the native Chinook salmon that the men were reeling in this past week were there only because state and federal agencies have stepped in to do much of the salmon-raising that Califoia’s overtapped rivers once did. Most of the fish were bo at the agencies’ hatcheries and carried in trucks for release downstream.
As the men watched and waited for one of their fishing poles to dip sharply, Victor Gonella, president of the Golden Gate Salmon Association, remembered his childhood in the 1950s and 1960s when the salmon population was healthy enough that he could fish most months.

A “felony stop” in front of a Los Angeles Inteational Airport terminal Sunday netted three auto theft suspects and forced the evacuation of an entire terminal as a security precaution, authorities said.
People either ran or were escorted out of the terminal onto a tarmac at Terminal 3, said airport spokeswoman Mary Grady.
“Some people got over-conceed and went onto the tarmac,” Grady said. She was not sure if police had directed people to the tarmac.
“The situation was and is quite dynamic, and we are still putting together exact details,” she said. “The bottom line is that we evacuated the entire terminal.”
Officer Rob Pedregon of the Los Angeles Airport Police Department said the incident occurred about 9 a.m. and, in an effort to control the crime scene as well as the public’s safety, officers ushered people off the sidewalks and back into the terminal.

HANGZHOU, China (AP) — Setting aside their cyber and maritime disputes, President Barack Obama and China's President Xi Jinping on Saturday sealed their nations' participation in last year's Paris climate change agreement. They hailed their new era of climate cooperation as the best chance for saving the planet.
At a ceremony on the sidelines of a global economic summit, Obama and Xi, representing the world's two biggest carbon emitters, delivered a series of documents to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The papers certified the U.S. and China have taken the necessary steps to join the Paris accord that set nation-by-nation targets for cutting carbon emissions."This is not a fight that any one country, no matter how powerful, can take alone," Obama said of the pact. LOS ANGELES >> The music manager who helped introduce N.W.A to the masses has died. Jerry Heller was 75 years old.
Heller’s cousin, Gary Ballen, says Heller died Friday night at a hospital in Thousand Oaks after suffering a heart attack while driving earlier in the day.
Heller co-founded Ruthless Records with Eazy-E, which released N.W.A’s seminal album “Straight Outta Compton” in 1988, launching the West Coast gangsta rap movement. Ruthless was also behind such artists as J.J. Fad, Michel’le and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.
Actor Paul Giamatti played the veteran music manager in last year’s hit film “Straight Outta Compton.” Heller sued the film’s producers for defamation after its release, claiming it portrayed him as a villain.
“It made him look bad, like he stole money from (Eazy) or something, which never happened,” Ballen said Saturday. “They just rewrote history. And because of that, he had this lawsuit and it’s been going on and on. It really stressed ادامه مطلب

DEKLE BEACH, Fla. >> Tropical Storm Hermine was intensifying Saturday as it moved slowly up the Atlantic Coast with heavy rains, wind and storm surges making a mess of the holiday.
Hermine (her-MEEN) already caused 2 deaths, damaged homes and businesses and left hundreds of thousands without electricity from Florida to Virginia.
“This is not a beach weekend for anyone in the Mid-Atlantic to the northeast,” said Eric Blake, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
At 2 p.m. Saturday, Hermine was centered 90 miles east of Duck, North Carolina, with top sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph), moving east at 10 mph (17 kph).
Tropical Storm Waings were in effect as far north as Coecticut, with dangerous storm surge expected along the coast from Virginia to New Jersey. Goveors all along the coast aounced emergency preparations.
Hermine rose up over the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 1 hurricane, hitting Florida and then crossing over Georgia on Friday.ادامه مطلب

Thousands of Califoia’s foster care kids may be overdrugged with psychotropic medications, often without medical follow-up or a legally required approval from a judge or parent, according to a stinging report by the Califoia State Auditor.
“The state and counties have failed to adequately oversee the prescribing of these medications,” wrote auditor Elaine M. Howle.
The long-awaited report, released in August by State Auditor Elaine Howle, mirrors many findings of Bay Area News Group’s investigative series “Drugging Our Kids.” Those stories, which appeared in Southe Califoia News Group publications, including this one, highlighted how only 10 percent of the state’s 1,280 highest prescribers were responsible about 50 percent of the time a foster child was given an antipsychotic, one of the most powerful classes of psychiatric drugs.

A group of students at Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead have created a stir for displaying Confederate flags, staked into the beds of their pickup trucks, in the school parking lot.
On Friday, two Ford pickups, parked side-by-side, sat parked in the school parking lot, one Confederate flag and one American flag displayed in the bed of each truck. The black pickup also sported stickers from Patriot Alliance, an online retailer of clothing, National Rifle Association, and Donald Trump campaign signs.
Also on Friday, Ruing Springs resident Jeifer Celise-Reyes, whose daughter began her freshman year at the high school last month, said she sent emails to school board president Cindy Gardner, school district Superintendent Giovai H. Aous, and the ACLU expressing her ire over the issue.

Rishi Sharma is hoping local veterans will help him with his mission to interview combat veterans of World War II.
The 18-year-old Aguora Hills resident has completed more than 100 interviews and is shifting his attention to the Inland Empire. The recent high school graduate has decided to defer his college education so that he can conduct daily interviews.
“When I first started, I was an armchair historian about WWII. I knew more than the average person, but delving into this, there’s an amazing amount of raw information,” he said. “After each interview, the picture becomes slightly more clearer of what they faced.”
Through his nonprofit, Heroes of the Second World War, Sharma is conducting about one interview a day. The teen will provide the veteran with a DVD, giving them all the rights to the interview, he said.

HOLLYWOOD — Rock’s top-selling duo Daryl Hall and John Oates were honored with the 2,587th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today.

Music executive Jerry Greenberg joined Hall and Oates in speaking at the 11:30 a.m. ceremony in front of the Musicians Institute on Hollywood Boulevard.
Hall and Oates formed their partnership in 1972, going on to record 21 albums, which have sold more than 80 million copies. They were recognized as rock’s all-time top selling duo in 1987 by the music industry trade organization the Recording Industry Association of America, a distinction they still hold.
From the mid-1970s to mid-1980s, they had six No. 1 singles -- “Rich Girl,” “Kiss on My List,” “Private Eyes,” “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do),” “Maneater” and “Out of Touch.”
Hall also wrote “Everytime You Go Away,” which Paul Young made a No. 1 hit in 1985.

FlyAway airport shuttle service between LAX and Santa Monica will be discontinued immediately after Labor Day weekend.
The Santa Monica service will stop ruing at midnight on Tuesday.
Airport commissioners voted earlier this summer to end service for the Santa Monica route due to low ridership, according to Los Angeles World Airports spokesman Charles Paunzio.
FlyAway service will still operate out of Westwood, Long Beach, Hollywood, Union Station, Van Nuys and the Orange Line’s Woodley Station.
