    The “Beach Pantry,” stocked with caed beans, soups, grape juice and other goods, is a new resource at Cal State Long Beach for students who find themselves unable to cover the combined costs of study and meals. The pantry has been open since the Aug. 22 begiing of the campus’ fall term. Cal State Long Beach’s student govement, with help from a Lakewood charity called Food Finders, created the stash of nonperishable foods for students enduring short- or long-term difficulties. Food insecurity is actually a fairly widespread problem on Cal State University campuses; university officials reported in February that some 23 percent of students within the Cal State system experience food insecurity...

  • Man killed in shooting this morning in Long Beach's Zaferia neighborhood

    A man in his 40s was shot to death early Tuesday moing in Long Beach’s Zaferia neighborhood, according to authorities. Officers responded to the 1600 block of Hile Avenue around 4:45 a.m. when they got a call about a shooting that had just happened and ended with someone lying in the street, police said. When they arrived, officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the upper torso, Long Beach police spokesman Sgt. Brad Johnson said. The man was unresponsive, according to police. A Long Beach Fire Department crew determined the man was dead, Johnson said. Police said the shooting is still under investigation, and it’s unclear at this point if it was gang-related.     LONG BEACH (CNS) - One of two men charged in the shooting death of a 19- year-old man in Long Beach appeared in court Monday but did not enter a plea. Edgar Miguel Espinoza, 18, of Downey, was arrested in San Diego Thursday in coection with the killing of Nick Cubas. Cubas, also of Downey, was found dead about 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 4 in the area of Willow Street and the San Gabriel River, according to the Long Beach Police Department, which has not released additional details. Espinoza appeared in a Long Beach courtroom Monday where a judge ordered him held without bail. His arraignment was postponed to Sept. 14.     As part of a wide-ranging bust focused on mail-related crimes in Southe Califoia, federal officials said Friday that they’d charged 33 people — including one from Long Beach and one from Lakewood — with committing crimes including stealing cellphones from a mail-processing center and hoarding almost 50,000 pieces of undelivered mail.   • Shooter flees after car struck by gunfire in Long Beach

    Long Beach police are investigating after a parked car in a West Long Beach neighborhood was struck by gunfire early Friday moing. Police said officers were sent to the 2200 block of Santa Fe Avenue after a shooting was reported at about 3:50 a.m. When they arrived, the officers discovered nobody was injured and only the car was hit, Long Beach police spokesman Sgt. Brad Johnson said. The shooter fled on foot and has not been arrested, police said. Investigators don’t know at this point if the shooting was gang related, Johnson said.   • Southbound Long Beach Freeway closed in big-rig crash

    LONG BEACH — The southbound lanes of the Long Beach (710) Freeway were closed at the San Diego (405) Freeway this moing because of a vehicle collision that involved several big rigs and left one person critically injured, the Califoia Highway Patrol reported. The accident was reported around 12:30 a.m. and involved at least three big rigs, CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos said. Two trapped motorists were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals. One of them is in critical condition, Villalobos said. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. All lanes are expected to remain close until 7 a.m., according to the CHP.     Plaing beach days may be a little easier thanks to a new water quality prediction tool that forecasts bacteria levels at a handful of Califoia beaches — and Long Beach is one of them. Heal the Bay, known for its aual Beach Report Card, offers daily “nowcasts” based on various environmental conditions, such as rainfall, waves, tides and past bacteria concentrations. The information is available via a free mobile app or through Heal the Bay’s website.     The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors went on record Tuesday against a state bill that would reduce the number of county seats on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board of Directors from five to two. Senate Bill 1379, sponsored by Sen. Tony Mendoza, D-Artesia, would maintain 14 board seats, but replace three of the county seats with a post for Long Beach and for appointees of the president pro tempore of the Senate and the speaker of the Assembly. Rose Trevis’ Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit, filed March 29 against Hawleywood’s Barber Shop, alleged discrimination based on gender and gender identity.
