Why a teen history buff is looking for World War II combat veterans

  • نیلوبلاگ

Rishi Sharma is hoping local veterans will help him with his mission to interview combat veterans of World War II. The 18-year-old Aguora Hills resident has completed more than 100 interviews and is shifting his attention to the Inland Empire. The recent high school graduate has decided to defer his college education so that he can conduct daily interviews. “When I first started, I was an armchair historian about WWII. I knew more than the average person, but delving into this, there’s an amazing amount of raw information,” he said. “After each interview, the picture becomes slightly more clearer of what they faced.” Through his nonprofit, Heroes of the Second World War, Sharma is conductin...

Beck in January did recommend that District Attoey Jackie Lacey file criminal char...

  • Demand sags for California credits aimed at greenhouse gases

  • نیلوبلاگ

SAN FRANCISCO >> Califoia’s latest carbon auction brought disappointing results Tuesday as litigation and lagging support by lawmakers weigh down the state’s landmark programs combating climate change. State officials said only 34u2009percent of the available carbon pollution credits were sold in the latest auction under the program, which requires companies that emit climate-changing gases to buy the pollution permits. It was a slight rebound from this spring, when investors bought just 10u2009percent of the pollution credits offered, signaling a rocky period for the state’s overall campaign against climate-changing pollution from fossil fuels. The cap-and-trade program is a keystone...

You have to be so strong-minded, and if anybody is, she is.” Rhode proved her mettle by surviving a pair of tense shoot-offs to win the bronze medal over China’s Wei Meng and become the first woman to medal in six consecutive Olympic Games. When Keldren Joshua stepped out of his mother’s gray hatchback, he greeted family and friends who had waited a decade to see him on the free side of a prison fence. “Hi, everybody,” he said. The 45-year-old was arrested in Los Angeles for conspiracy to distribute 500 grams of methamphetamine and sentenced in 2006 to 15 years in prison after his mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years was extended because of outstanding traffic warrants. He became one of more than 200 nonviolent federal prisoners whose sentences were commuted last week by President Barack Obama, and Wednesday, made his exit from the federal prison on Terminal Island in San Pedro to a waiting group of family and friends. • Rio 2016 Olympics: Green water greets divers

  • نیلوبلاگ

RIO DE JANEIRO — Green, not gold, was the color of the day at the Olympic diving venue. Sure, China won its third consecutive gold medal on Tuesday, but the buzz was about the color of the water in the diving pool — a murky green. That was in stark contrast to the pool’s light blue color the previous day and also that of the clear water in the second pool used for the water polo competition at Maria Lenk Aquatic Center. British diver Tom Daley, who eaed bronze in men’s synchronized 10-meter on Monday, tweeted a photo of the two pools next to each other and captioned it, “Ermmm...what happened?!” Water quality has been a major issue surrounding the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, but in the ocean a...

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — Jordan Spieth walked with purpose down the long corridor toward his locker, not stopping to look at the photos and scorecards that cover more than a century of golf history at Baltusrol. Maybe that was just as well. History has proven to be his toughest opponent this year, and it was bound to be a losing battle. Dating to 1934 when the Masters began, Spieth is among 14 players who have won two majors in one year. Only five of those players ever won a single major the following year, and it’s an elite group — Aold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods. Woods is the only player to win two majors in consecutive seasons. Spieth is not trying to salva...

Because it’s going to be ground zero for a heck of a party when one of music’s most hyperactive and trailblazing bands performs songs from its decades-long career during a one-night show. “We’ve been giving our fans a career retrospective. We give you some things from every era of the band and some of where we are right now. So it takes a while to get through it all,” said Norwood Fisher, bassist for the genre-blasting band Fishbone.
