Plaing beach days may be a little easier thanks to a new water quality prediction tool that forecasts bacteria levels at a handful of Califoia beaches — and Long Beach is one of them. Heal the Bay, known for its aual Beach Report Card, offers daily “nowcasts” based on various environmental conditions, such as rainfall, waves, tides and past bacteria concentrations. The information is available via a free mobile app or through Heal the Bay’s website. Created in collaboration with Stanford University, UCLA and Heal the Bay, spokesman Matthew King said the “nowcast” system makes predictions during the summer months (April 1 to Oct. 31) at five beaches: Belmont Pier in Long Beach; Doheny State B...

  • U.S. women's water polo team earns its shot at gold

  • نیلوبلاگ

RIO DE JANEIRO >> It was as close as a two-goal game in the third quarter Wednesday. But, eventually and somewhat inevitably, the U.S. women’s water polo team worked its way into position to go for a gold medal. “As you could tell, that was a battle today,” attacker Courtney Mathewson said. “I think my skin is like magenta colored.” The Americans wore down Hungary for a 14-10 victory and now will face Italy in the Olympic finale Friday. Maggie Steffens scored a team-high four goals for the U.S. Maddie Musselman added a pair. “I can’t help but smile,” Musselman said. “It’s just so enjoyable. But that doesn’t mean the emotion will be lacking Monday when the U.S. women’s water polo team plays its quarterfinal game. For one thing, the Americans are paired against Brazil, a team that figures to be overmatched but still the host nation and a country famous for showing its support by making a lot of noise. For another, some of these U.S. players understand — win or lose, now that group play is over — nothing is guaranteed but the fast-approaching end of their Olympic careers. “There’s going to be a part of me that’s very sad,” Courtney ...

  • 2016 Rio Olympics: U.S. men's water polo finish disappointing run

RIO DE JANEIRO >> It was the end of a touament, end of an Olympics and, quite possibly, the end of an era. When the U.S. men’s water polo team concluded its Rio 2016 schedule on Sunday, the reality that captain and five-time Olympian Tony Azevedo could be done was, in fact, very real. “It’s insane,” said teammate Bret Bonai, who, at 22, is 12 years younger than Azevedo. “I don’t know. I’ve got pictures with that guy when I was like 6. It was awesome to have been able to play with him.” The Americans finished with a 10-7 victory over Italy, but their 2-3 overall record didn’t advance them in the touament. For this part, Azevedo, a product of Long Beach Wilson High, said he wasn’t ready...

RIO DE JANEIRO >> The last time Anthony Ervin won an individual Olympic gold medal, the thing helped nearly sink his entire life. Doesn’t sound like that will be a problem this time. On Friday, the Hart High graduate, at age 35, won his second individual gold, claiming the 50-meter freestyle. A day later, Ervin reflected on the difference between this medal and the one he took home as a teenager from the 2000 Sydney Games and the people who helped him ea both. “That’s what got me here, the people,” he said. “When I was younger, I don’t think I understood that.
