The number of teenagers finding summer jobs surged in June to a three-year high, according to a new report from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Employment among teens ages 16 to 19 increased by 691,000, the report said. That was up 13 percent from the 609,000 teen jobs that were added in June of 2015, and it was the biggest boost for that month since 779,000 teens secured summer work in June 2013. Teen hiring for May and June — the first two months of the three-month summer hiring period — outpaced hiring for the same period last year. Califoia employers added 40,300 jobs in June and the Golden State led the nation in year-over-year growth with 461,100 jobs added, the state Employment Development Department reported Friday. Last month’s increase was more than double the amount of jobs added the previous month and Califoia’s aual employment gain outpaced Florida, which ranked second with 244,500 jobs added, and Texas, which added 171,100. Califoia’s unemployment rate ticked up to 5.4 percent in June from 5.2 percent in May but it still landed well below the year-ago rate of 6.2 percent. BELL GARDENS — A man was shot to death while riding a bicycle along the Los Angeles River bicycle path in Bell Gardens, authorities said today. The shooting was reported at 6:26 p.m. Monday along the bike path west of the Long Beach (710) Freeway and north of Firestone Boulevard, said Deputy Crystal Heandez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The man was riding a bicycle on the dirt path adjacent to the Los Angeles River just west of the Long Beach Freeway when “the suspect approached him on foot and shot him,” Heandez said. A Hawaiian Gardens hospital that tends to mostly low-income patients in the southeast Los Angeles and Long Beach area filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week, having nearly $26 million in unsecured debt, according to court documents. Gardens Regional Hospital Medical Center, formerly known as Tri-City Regional Medical Center, filed the court documents Tuesday.
