The fire buing in the Cherry Valley area was slightly bigger and further contained Wednesday moing, but firefighters remain conceed that winds and dry fuel could cause the blaze to explode. • PHOTOS: The Bogart fire bus brush in Cherry Valley “With any hot spots, that wind change is always a conce,” said Cal Fire Capt. Liz Brown adding that 20-mph wind gusts are expected throughout the day. Most of the vegetation buing is a combination of chaparral and short grasses, and it’s those tinder-dry grasses that are worrisome for fire officials. Hamstrung by strict limits on political contributions, Califoia lawmakers have found a way to continue to extract large sums from some of Sacramento’s most powerful special interests. Increasingly, they’re using “ballot measure committees,” little-known and barely regulated accounts that are supposed to promote or oppose state and local initiatives but in practice are paying for consultants and polling firms, new suits and trips to Mexico. And the money for the politicians’ perks comes in the form of five-figure donations from the same special interests that state rules were intended to curtail. An analysis by Digital First Media, which includes this news organization, shows that the number...

Detectives have waed the public of a sudden increase in tire and wheel thefts from late model Chevrolet trucks in the Harbor Area, releasing a photograph of a man in a ski mask captured as he loaded stolen wheels into a van. Residents have reported 12 crimes in the last month in Wilmington, San Pedro, Harbor City, and Harbor Gateway, Los Angeles police Detective Carmine Sasso said. “They kind of made their rounds,” Sasso said. “It’s just crazy.” Thieves primarily targeted Chevrolet trucks parked on the street. Using cinder blocks, bricks or wood blocks to prop up the vehicle, they take all four wheels and tires. “A good crew can prop them up on cinder blocks and remove all four tires and wh...

We’ve all gotten them. Like an unwanted plague, those aoying robocalls always seem to come just as we’re sitting down to dier or getting ready to watch a football game. The messages are varied but most have one thing in common: They’re trying to sell us something. Some robocalls are looking to steal our personal information Some implore us to buy solar panels or donate money to a political candidate, while others ask us to support a local charity or take a ride-share survey. And it gets worse. Some of these automated calls offer fraudulent credit card services or questionable auto warranty protection. Julie Jeffs had taken a 6 a.m. flight from Michigan last week and arrived late in the moing to LAX, where she expected to spend a long day hunkering down at the Tom Bradley Inteational Terminal before hopping on an 11:30 p.m. red eye to Fiji. But the airline ticket counter wouldn’t be open until 7 p.m., so Jeffs was unable to get a boarding pass and clear security, denying her access to the extensive variety of gourmet restaurants near the gates at the newly revamped terminal at Los Angeles Inteational Airport. So she began looking for a sit-down restaurant, lugging around a 50-pound suitcase so she could have a decent meal and a cold glass of beer. It was a long search. There are just two ...

Don’t let French toast bacon bombs or deep-fried Oreos or adorable pig races fool you: Califoia’s county fairs are very big businesses, run with a startling variety of managerial prowess.
