A Long Beach police officer shot at a man in the Poly High neighborhood Wednesday afteoon, then surrounded the neighborhood after the man ran from the scene with a handgun, police said.
What led to the shooting remains unclear, but no one was hit by gunfire. The man being sought was taken into custody at about 5 p.m., but police have not released his name.
The shooting happened around 3:57 p.m. near Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and 21st Street, said Sgt. Bradley Johnson, a department spokesman.

Johnson said that officers patroling the area initiated contact with the man just before the officer fired. The suspect then ran, holding a gun, and was seen hopping fences in the area.
Police set up a perimeter in the area, and used a helicopter to locate the man.
