Ken Howard, award-wiing actor and SAG-AFTRA president, dies at 71

Keeth Joseph “Ken” Howard Jr., a Tony- and Emmy Award-wiing actor and president of SAG-AFTRA, died Wednesday at his home near Los Angeles, the performers’ union said in a statement. He was 71.

Throughout an illustrious career, the Yale-trained actor tued his blue-eyed blond looks into a string of enduring characters on stage and screen. Once the two unions merged, he would become the first president of the 160,000-member Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

Howard was elected president of Screen Actors Guild in 2009 and re-elected in 2011 on a pledge to unite SAG and the AFTRA.
