The day after Cal State Long Beach President Jane Close Conoley said at a student forum on campus safety that she would be more transparent with information, the university issued a campus safety notification reporting a 19-year-old was arrested Thursday moing for possessing two illegal knives.

“One of the president’s commitments in light of the previous classroom incident is to be more transparent with the community campus regarding safety issues,” CSULB spokesman Mike Uhlenkamp said. “This communication is part of the process of keeping the campus community informed.”

James Edward Deguzman was booked at Long Beach City Jail for having knives longer than 2.5 inches, the maximum allowed under current university policy.

Campus police were called at 10:29 a.m. after a student in the Liberal Arts 5 building saw Deguzman repeatedly opening and closing a black knife, according to a campus police crime bulletin.

Deguzman opened a second knife, which was larger than the first, and placed both on his desk, out of sight of the professor. The student, who was the only person witnessing the incident, left class and called the police because the blades were large, the bulletin said.

Deguzman did not brandish the knives at any person, nor threaten anyone with them, the bulletin said.

CSULB police arrested the student without incident.
