Large sea lion washes ashore in Long Beach

The carcass of a large sea lion washed up onto the beach at 64th Place on the Long Beach Peninsula Monday moing. It was scheduled to be removed shortly after noon by beach maintenance crews using a front-loader because of the sea lion’s size, said Gonzalo Medina, Long Beach Fire Department’s Marine Safety chief.

Gonzalo didn’t know the weight of the animal, but said it was too large for lifeguards to deal with. Sea lions can reach more than 700 pounds.

“It had been dead for some time,” said Gonzalo. “The way the currents work here, animals that die outside the breakwater can come in through the opening and they tend to wind up around 64th Place.”
