The Army Corps of Engineers first public scoping meetings to study possible modifications to the Long Beach Breakwater and other methods of improving the San Pedro Bay’s ecosystem are scheduled to take place on April 7.

The meetings are scheduled as part of the environmental review process so Army Corps of Engineers representatives can gauge the public’s views on the project. The project’s twin objectives are to improve habitat conditions and water circulation, according City Hall’s aouncement of the meetings.

The breakwater prevents big waves from reaching the Long Beach shoreline. Surfing enthusiasts are among those who have asked for changes to the barrier that may bring bigger surf to the city’s beaches. Waterfront property owners and shipping industry figures, however, have an interest in preventing heavy surf from reaching local waters.

The meetings are scheduled to take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bixby Park Community Center, 130 Cherry Ave.
