Port terminal accident claims life of 71-year-old marine clerk worker

A 71-year-old longshore worker was killed Wednesday at the Port of Los Angeles in what is being described as an industrial accident, a port spokesman said.

The man, a member of Local 63 of the marine clerk’s union, was working in a staging area at the Everport Terminal at Berths 226-236 located on Terminal Island — across the Main Chael from the cruise terminal and the Battleship Iowa — when he was run over by a tractor trailer at about 2:45 p.m., according to spokesman Phillip Sanfield.

The man’s name and other details were not available, Sanfield said, adding that the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) was investigating along with Port police.

The union office had no comment as the incident was still under investigation as of late Thursday.

Sanfield said the man was working in the area where truck chassis queue up to load containers being removed from cargo ships for delivery.

The terminal closed down out of respect for the victim and his family, Sanfield said, and was set to reopen Thursday night.

“It’s not being looked at as anything other than an accident,” Sanfield said.
