Long Beach police investigating stabbing in South Wrigley

Long Beach police are investigating a stabbing in the South Wrigley neighborhood.

Officers were dispatched at 10:59 a.m. to a stabbing call near Pacific Avenue and 21st Street, said Sgt. Bradley Johnson, a police spokesman, in an email.

Upon arrival, officers located a man suffering multiple stab wounds to his upper torso.

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics arrived at the scene at 11:03 a.m., said Jake Heflin, a fire department spokesman. The victim was transported to a hospital and was rushed into surgery, Johnson said.

The officers contacted witnesses and canvassed the area where they located possible suspects who were detained.

Police identified the suspects as Jose Maldonado and Jesus Mercado Jr., both 19, of Long Beach, Johnson said. Maldonado was booked on one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon and is being held on $30,000 bail. Mercado was booked on one count of misdemeanor battery.

An investigation is ongoing.
