The City Place shopping center’s in-progress renovations now include plans for a new building designed to include a mix of new apartments and retail space.
City Place owners representative Tony Shooshani aounced plans for the building, to be named The Place at City Place, during a Thursday night event attended by members of the American Institute of Architects’ chapter for the Long Beach and South Bay areas.
The presentation took place inside the former Nordstrom Rack store at the downtown Long Beach shopping center. City Place’s redesign calls for that space to be converted into new restaurants and offices for P+R Architects and urban designers Studio One Eleven.
On the subject of the new building, Shooshani said the plans call the construction of 20 new apartments above some 5,000 square feet of new retail space. The new building is set to be build on Fifth Street, across from the former Wal-Mart site.
City Place’s ownership does not yet have an aouncement for what will happen at the former Wal-Mart site, which unexpectedly closed in late January after the retailer aounced an inteational restructuring plan.
“I guess you all want to know what’s going to happen with the Wal-Mart space,” Shooshani told his audience, before a short pause. “I can’t tell you.”
The anti-climactic non-aouncement elicited chuckles from the audience.
City Place’s ownership aounced plans for a four-year redesign last August. The center’s ownership has hired Studio One Eleven to redesign the retail center’s facades and is also taking the public’s suggestions for a new name.
Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, City Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez, Downtown Long Beach Associates Chief Executive Kraig Kojian and Studio One Eleven senior principal Michael Bohn also spoke before Thursday evening’s audience.
Garcia said he expects construction to begin on five new downtown residential buildings in the next year.
“We believe in density. Density is good. Density is our friend,” he said.
