Film on history of Long Beach to air on PBS

Long Beach is getting more than its share of air time in April, with PBS presenting several programs relating to the city.

A locally produced film on the history of Long Beach will air on PBS nationwide begiing in April.

“Sky Blue Sea,” by advanced media production director Dave Kelly, premiered last November at Cal State Long Beach, using the advanced media production facilities at CSULB.

Kelly used old photos, film and video clips from the city’s founding until present day, focusing on Naval and aviation activities to tell historical achievements, events and tragedies.

Long Beach residents can watch the film on PBS SoCal Plus, based in Costa Mesa, and on KVCR. PBS SoCal Plus will air “Sky Blue Sea” at various times, begiing at 7 p.m. April 9. Rebroadcasts occur at 4 a.m. April 10 and 6 p.m. April 24. PBS SoCal Plus is on digital frequency 50.2 and is available in Long Beach on Charter Communications chael 314 and Verizon FiOS chael 470.

The film will be shown on KVCR at 10 p.m. on April 10. KVCR is available to Long Beach Verizon FiOS subscribers on chael 24 and in high definition on chael 524.

A grant from the Long Beach Navy Memorial Heritage Association paid for the film’s production.
