Long Beach council to adjourn in honor of P-T columnist Tom Heessy

The Long Beach City Council will adjou its meeting Tuesday in honor of longtime Press-Telegram columnist Tom Heessy, who died Saturday, Mayor Robert Garcia aounced Monday.

“We are all lucky to have been able to read his wise words over the years and our whole city will miss his voice,” the mayor said in an emailed newsletter.

Heessy, 80, died of heart complications. He wrote a regular column for 27 years, and frequently contributed columns for another six years, until 2013.

Heessy also raised money for charitable causes, including an ugly dog contest, and spearheaded campaigns to help veterans. He also started the Press-Telegram’s Send-a-Kid-to-Camp fund, which has raised more than $1 million and sent hundreds of youngsters to summer camps in local mountains.
