The Califoia State University and its faculty union aounced a tentative salary agreement Friday moing that will avert a plaed strike and give instructors a 10.5 percent salary increase over three years.

The raises will come in essentially two stages, with faculty members receiving a 7 percent raise at the end of this academic year and an additional 3.5 percent for 2017-2018.

The two sides have been locked in a stalemate since last May, when Cal State’s management offered faculty the same 2 percent raise other employees, including administrators, had agreed to. The faculty union proposed a 5 percent salary increase. Neither side had publicly budged from those numbers until this week.

The agreement avoids what would have been the largest strike at a higher education in U.S. history. Faculties at all 23 Cal State campuses were prepared to begin a five-day strike April 13. Classes will now continue as usual.

MORE TO COME.
