Fire extinguished near historic downtown Long Beach building

Long Beach firefighters knocked down a fire in a vacant building undergoing renovations on Pine Avenue between Fourth and Fifth streets in downtown Long Beach Friday moing.

A call reporting a vehicle fire in a parking garage came in around 10:49 a.m., said Jake Heflin, a department spokesman. Units arrived at the scene at 10:52 a.m.

Several fire units could be seen on Fifth and Fourth streets between Pine and Pacific avenues. Heavy, black smoke poured out of an open door in a fenced-off section of W. Melrose Way.

The building affected by the fire abuts the historic Kress Building at Pine Avenue and Fifth Street, which was not affected.

Workers doing construction at the building could be seen outside as firefighters entered.

The fire was extinguished at 10:59 a.m., Heflin said. The building was vacant and no injuries were reported.
