Southern California News Group wins 3 Headliner Awards

The Southe Califoia News Group won three National Headliner Awards, the organization behind the prestigious awards aounced Tuesday.

• The staff of The Sun received third place for its coverage of the San Beardino terror attack in the category “spot news in daily newspapers, all sizes.” First place went to the Baltimore Sun for coverage of the Baltimore riots and Freddie Gray case, and second place went to the Dallas Moing News for its stories of the Dec. 26 North Texas toadoes.

• David Bauman of the Press-Enterprise won second place for his San Beardino Terror Attack entry in the newspaper spot news photography category. The wier in that category was “Mother Loses Son,” by Stephanie Strasburg of the Pittsburgh Tribunexad-Review.

• Ken Steinhardt of the Orange County Register received third place for “Dog Day Afteoon” in the newspaper feature photography category.

The Southe Califoia News Group, formed after Digital First Media purchased the Register and Press-Enterprise in March, consists of 11 newspapers and more than a dozen community weeklies in the region.

The aual Headliner contest is one of the oldest and largest in the country that recognizes joualistic merit in the communications industry, according to the award committee.
