Daily Breeze editor Frank Suraci among Society of Professional Journalists honorees

Daily Breeze City Editor Frank Suraci will be honored tonight with a “Distinguished Joualist” award from the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Society of Professional Joualists.

The longtime South Bay editor will receive the award with four other joualists at the 40th aual ceremony, including Associated Press editor Steve Loeper, KNX business anchor Frank Mottek, ABC7 Eyewitness News co-anchor David Ono and Curbed LA Senior Editor Adrian Glick Kudler.

The distinction is given to print, broadcast and digital joualists with records of achievement “who demonstrate good news judgment, a strong sense of ethics and a passion for getting the story right.”

Print awards are presented to joualists at publications with circulations above and below 90,000.

“I share this honor with my colleagues at the Daily Breeze who share a commitment to producing thoughtful and impactful joualism,” said Suraci, who began his career at the newspaper as an inte reporter more than four decades ago. “To be recognized by my peers in joualism who I have the utmost respect for is particularly humbling and meaningful to me.”

Suraci led the team of reporters that won a Pulitzer Prize one year ago for their investigation into corruption at the Centinela Valley Union High School District, as well as the Scripps Howard National Joualism Award for community joualism and the National Headliner Award for Investigative Reporting.

Suraci has covered or overseen the Daily Breeze’s coverage of other prominent local and national stories, including the McMartin Preschool molestation case in Manhattan Beach, the passage of the ground-breaking Proposition 13, the O.J. Simpson murder case and a deadly plane crash at Los Angeles Inteational Airport.

Frank Pine, executive editor of the Daily Breeze and Southe Califoia News Group, said the news organization has “been fortunate to benefit from Frank’s dedication to quality joualism and extensive knowledge of the South Bay. We are grateful to Frank for his longtime contributions to the Daily Breeze and the invaluable service he provides to the community.”

Suraci joins the late columnist John Bogert, crime reporter Larry Altman, former reporter Denise Nix, and retired managing editor Jean Adelsman, as Daily Breeze employees to receive the “Distinguished Joualist” award.

The ceremony at the Omni Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles will also recognize First Amendment attoey Theodore Boutrous, LARadio.com founder Don Barrett and joualism instructor and former United Press Inteational reporter Kathleen Neumeyer.
