Coachella 2016: Festival hip-hop acts bigger than usual, here's what that means

This year, the hip-hop at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival is a little different. The festival has a reputation for hosting an eclectic mix of artists and hip-hop has always been around, but acts have usually been smaller, more underground artists. Acts like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar have been exceptions that prove the rule.

But, in 2016, the acts are bigger, more commercially successful and bunch seem to be set for Friday.

Joey Bada$$, DJ Mustard, A$AP Rocky, G-Eazy and Rae Sremmurd all play Friday.

Saturday is stacked too with Run the Jewels, SZA and Ice Cube (of N.W.A.).

Here’s what you need to know about Friday’s acts.

• Joey Bada$$’s January 2015 album “B4.Da.$$” hit No. 5 on the Billboard charts when it was released. He performs at 3 p.m. on the main Coachella stage.

• DJ Mustard is known for producing hits for other hip-hop (and R & B stars) like Tyga’s 2011 hit “Rack City” to Big Sean’s 2014 hit “I Don’t F*** With You.” His 2014 album “10 Summers” featured a lot of the artists he has produced for. He is scheduled to perform at 5:05 p.m.inside the Sahara tent.

• G-Eazy’s latest album, the December 2015 release “When It’s Dark Out,” features the top 10 single “Me, Myself & I” featuring Bebe Rexha. His set is scheduled for 9:10 p.m. inside the Sahara tent.

• A$AP Rocky’s “At. Long. Last. ASAP” album hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts when it was released in May last year. His biggest single is “F*****’ Problems” which features Drake, Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz. He’s scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. on the Outdoor Theatre.

• Lastly, Rae Sremmurd has a bunch of singles played on the radio from their 2014 album “”SremmLife” including “No Type” and “No Flex Zone” (these both sold more than one million copies) and “Throw Some Mo” featuring Nicki Minaj. They’re set to perform at 11:05 p.m. on the Sahara tent after G-Eazy.
