Coachella 2016: Robert DeLong's jam, Bob Moses gets cut off, Borns finds his groove

Indie and electronic acts kicked off the first day of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival — and their sets featured everything from surprise guests to acts who had their sound cut off.

An energetic, fist-pumping Robert DeLong enlisted the help of jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington and violinist Lindsey Sterling for his afteoon set at the Outdoor Theatre.

DeLong brought out Washington for a freestyle jam session and then Sterling for “Long Way Down.” For the finale, he brought back Washington and Sterling for “Global Concepts.”

Even though electronic duo act Bob Moses had a packed Gobi tent enthralled until the last song, it didn’t stop organizers from cutting them off. First-timers Bob Moses leaed the hard way about Coachella’s strict time limits after their late afteoon set went two minutes over and had the plug pulled during their last song, “Touch and Go.”

Another first time act, Garret Bos — who performs under the stage name Bos — needed little introduction at the Mojave tent.

Performing to a full house, the pop artist and his backing band struggled a bit at first: Bos’ vocals were overshadowed by the instruments during the first song, “Seeing Stars.” Then there was a guitar miscue during “100,00 Emerald Pools.” Some fans in the VIP section even left after the latter song.

“Spirits are high. Thank you for bringing your glorious bodies to this tent,” Garrett said as he began to sing “Holy Ghost.”

By the time the Los Angeles-based musician was crooning “Past Lives,” he had found his momentum, dancing across the stage in form-fitting bell bottom jeans and a see-through green lace shirt which was opened down to the navel. Festivalgoers joined in on the fun, singing back the chorus.

He ended the set with “Electric Love,” as the crowd sang along to nearly every lyric.
