Coachella 2016: 6 top moments from Kamasi Washington's afternoon set

Tenor saxophonist and bandleader Kamasi Washington put together an amazing 3 p.m. set at the Sunday Coachella festival at the Outdoor Theatre with his 11-musician group.

Here are the top 6 moments (because 5 were not enough):

Father’s day:

Washington brought up his dad Ricky Washington to play flute and sax with him at the show.

Cat scratch:

DJ Battlecat (known for producing classic West Coast hip-hop songs for Snoop Dogg, W.C., E-40, Xzibit and more) showcased his scratching skills on stage with Washington and the rest of the band.

Singing songs:

Patrice Qui displaying her incredible singing skills on songs like “Henrietta Our Hero” and a remix of “The Rhythm Changes.”

Dueling drummers:

“The Magnificent 7” featured drummers Tony Austin and Ronald Bruner Jr.

Bass for the Place:

Miles Mosley played stand-up bass and rapped on the song “Abraham” while Washington and the rest of the band joined in at various parts.

True leader:

Washington played sax and took lead on all the above songs (well, not really the dueling drummers section) and gave a ruing commentary on song titles (“Henrietta Our Hero” was written for his grandmother) and more about his bandmates and his friendships with them all.
