Hot again today -- with wildfire danger -- in Southern California, but relief is on the way

LOS ANGELES — Southland temperatures will remain above normal today, helping to create wildfire conditions, but a shift from offshore to onshore winds this afteoon will usher in a cooling trend, forecasters said.

Despite the expected cooldown, a National Weather Service statement said mid-moing that an elevated danger of fire will persist through Wednesday as a result of gusty onshore winds and warm, dry conditions, with humidity levels expected to fall to between 10 and 20 percent in many areas.

Temperatures were 15-18 degrees above normal Sunday, and that should remain the case much of today, said National Weather Service meteorologist Kathy Hoxsie, adding that offshore winds have been sweeping in high heat from Nevada and the Four Coers area.

The onset of onshore winds should cause temperatures to dip and begin to revert to the 60s and 70s starting Tuesday, forecasters said.

Today’s highs are forecast to be 65 in Big Bear; 79 on Mount Wilson; 81 in Torrance; 82 at LAX; 83 in Palmdale; 84 in Lancaster and San Pedro; 85 in Avalon; 86 in Long Beach; 87 in North Hollywood; 88 in San Gabriel, Burbank and Redlands; 89 in Whittier, San Beardino, Rancho Cucamonga, Saugus and Pasadena; 90 in Van Nuys and Ontario; 91 in West Covina and Northridge; and 92 in Woodland Hills.

While some areas will be back in the 70s starting Tuesday, especially near the coast, others -- including Woodland Hills -- will fall back to the 70s only on Friday, when showers are expected in parts of the region.
