Highland woman struck, killed outside Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

INDIO >> A Highland woman attending the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival for the first time was struck and killed Friday night as she crossed the street near the festival grounds, officials said.

Michala Freeland, 18, had applied to work as a security guard at the festival, family members told local television station, KMIR. She was killed Friday night when she was struck by a Jeep near Avenue 52, east of Monroe Street, outside the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, according to Indio Police.

Freeland was crossing the roadway east of the intersection from the north side of the street, according to a police statement. The driver of the Jeep remained at the scene and has fully cooperated with the investigation.
