The Long Beach Police department will hold a drunken driver and driver license checkpoint this weekend, checking drivers for proper licensing and alcohol and/or drug impairment.
When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes.
The special operation will run from 7 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday at an undisclosed location in the North Division patrol area.
In the last three years, Long Beach police have investigated 1,032 DUI crashes, which claimed seven lives and resulted in another 370 injuries.
