Long Beach foodies have another spot to grab a meal and snap pastry photos for Instagram.
The Long Beach City College Bistro, and Bakery, operated by students in the Culinary Arts Program, are now open to the public, in Building V, near the coer of Carson Street and Clark Avenue at the Liberal Arts Campus.
The Bistro features a revolving prix fixe menu with a choice of appetizer or salad, entrée and dessert for $15, with the menu changing bi-weekly, and a vegetarian option is available. The Bistro each week focuses on cuisine from various regions, and entrées have included paella, roasted pork belly bao buns, osso bucco and mango salad.
Fifty people can be seated in the Bistro, so reservations are strongly recommended. Walk-ins are available, but seating is not guaranteed.
The Bakery offers a variety of items, from tarts and brioches to empanadas and paninis. Vegetarian options are available. Staples include the ham and cheese croissant, coconut macaroons and a chocolate croissant.
The Bakery is take-out only, but open seating is available in the outdoor patio.
The restaurant and bakery are part of a new building that opened last year with seven instructional kitchens and TV monitors for students to view faculty instruction close-up.
Building V underwent a $44 million transformation, and also houses the Math Department and Reprographics. Paid for by Measure E bond funds approved in 2002 and 2008, nearly 30,000 square feet of the 73,650 square-foot building are dedicated to culinary arts.
The program serves about 250 students who receive hands-on kitchen, restaurant and bakery management experience while working at the Bistro and Bakery.
“LBCC’s Bistro and Bakery hold their own against the best professionally run restaurants and bakeries in the region,” said LBCC Superintendent-President Eloy Ortiz Oakley, in news release. “We encourage members of our community to come taste and experience the results of our excellent culinary instruction and the hard work of our students.”
Bakery hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Bistro is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Bistro and Bakery are open during the fall and spring semesters only, and closed during the winter and spring breaks.
Parking is available in Veterans Stadium, located at Conant Street and Faculty Avenue., for a $2 all-day permit. Parking is also available in the J Parking Structure off of Clark Avenue.
