LBCC's $20 million project to construct new buildings

Long Beach City College officials broke ground this week on a $20-million construction project to upgrade the Electrical Program and Lifetime Leaing facilities at the Pacific Coast Campus that is expected to be completed in 2017.

The project includes one new building, QQ, while renovating another adjacent structure, RR. The Electrical Program will be located in both buildings, and Building QQ will share space with the Lifetime Leaing Center, which provides education for older adults re-entering the workforce.

The project will be funded by Measure E Bonds, which have been used at LBCC for $616 million in construction, renovation and repair projects.

“This project will modeize our electrical program and provide our students with a state-of-the-art leaing environment and the tools they need to succeed in this growing industry,” LBCC Superintendent-President Eloy Ortiz Oakley said in a statement.

The buildings will provide students and faculty with labs and technology, including green features to save water and energy, as well as two additional electric car charging stations.

Comprehensive campus

Once construction is completed, the Electrical Program will join other Advanced Manufacturing programs at the Pacific Coast Campus, including Welding, Computer Aided Design, Metal Fabrication and Computer Numerical Control. Having the related programs in one location will allow faculty and students to collaborate across departments, expanding their skills and education, campus officials said.

Thew new buildings include an outdoor work yard for solar panels, a work station for traffic signal technicians, a full automation wing with robotics, electro-hydraulics and pneumatics, specialized labs and seven electrical classrooms
