Whittier boy, 4, briefly trapped under car after hit-and-run crash into bedroom

WHITTIER — A car crashed into the bedroom of a home in unincorporated South Whittier Thursday where a boy was sleeping and a teenager was playing a video game.

Califoia Highway Patrol officers were searching for the hit-and-run driver.

The car crashed into the house on the 12400 block of South Ramsey Drive, adjacent to the intersection of Imperial Highway and Marquardt Avenue at 12:15 a.m., according to CHP Officer J. Lodeen.

“I heard a tremendous crash,” home owner David Mazon recalled hours after the incident.

He was sleeping down the hallway from the bedroom where his grandson Armando De La Cruz, 4, was sleeping and son, Eric Mazon, 18, was playing Nintendo.

“I ran to the room, where I could smell oil and dust,” he said. “I found my son trying to get my grandson’s leg from undeeath the car.”

He said police, who arrived soon after the crash, helped in lifting the vehicle so the boy could move from undeeath the vehicle.

They were taken to a local hospital and were released.

“Luckily they only had scrapes and bruises,” Mazon said as he looked around the small bedroom where a cinder block lay where his grandson had slept.

“I am so grateful they are OK, because we can rebuild the room,” he said. “It could have been a lot worse.”

CHP reported the Nissan 350Z was speeding northbound on Marquardt Avenue south of Imperial Highway when the driver lost control during a tu at the intersection and crashed through a wall and into the house.

The hit-and-run driver and the passenger fled the scene on foot and law enforcement were searching for them this moing, according to Lodeen.
