Punk rockers X played secret Long Beach show at Alex's Bar

Los Angeles punk rock icons X played to a packed house Thursday night during a secret show at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach.

The four-piece’s signature sound — guitarist Billy Zoom’s rockabilly-inspired riffs, drummer D.J. Bonebrake’s percussive drum attack and vocalists Exene Cervenka and John Doe’s songs of cheap motels, broken relationships and blue-collar hardships — has been part of Southe Califoia’s music scene for nearly four decades. The band formed in 1977 and its first album, “Los Angeles,” came out three years later.

X’s Thursday night setlist included that album’s title track — their most famous single — along with several other selections from their first four albums: “Wild Gift,” “Under the Big Black Sun” and “More Fun in the New World.”

LP3 and the Tragedy, a band featuring Louie Perez III, son of Los Lobos’ Louis Perez Jr., opened for X on Thursday.

X has scheduled three Southe Califoia shows for the weekend. The band is set to play three dates with LP3 and the Tragedy as well as Downey rockers The Blasters and East Los Angeles’ Los Lobos. Friday’s concert was scheduled for The Observatory in Santa Ana, Saturday’s is at Club Nokia in Los Angeles and Sunday’s at The Observatory North Park in San Diego.
