Muslim Rancho Cucamonga student says yearbook misprint has some attacking her

ANAHEIM >> The Muslim Los Osos High School student who was misidentified as a student named Isis said Monday she “can’t assume” the misprint was intentional, but it is “coincidental.”

Bayan Zehlif, a Muslim senior at the Rancho Cucamonga high school who wears a hijab, sat for one-on-one interviews with the media in the Anaheim office of Council on American-Islamic Relations Los Angeles.

The controversy bubbled Saturday when Zehlif took to Facebook to register her dismay at discovering another Los Oso student — Isis Phillips — was the name appearing under her photo.

“I am extremely saddened, disgusted, hurt and embarrassed that the Los Osos High School yearbook was able to get away with this. Apparently I am ‘Isis’ in the yearbook,” Zehlif posted on Facebook.

Until Monday, she was unavailable for comment.

Zehlif saids she wanted to enjoy end of school year until some students “started attacking me on social media.”

Meanwhile, Mat Holton, Superintendent of the Chaffey Joint Unified School District, had vowed Sunday moing to investigate whether the mislabeling was inadvertent or purposeful.

The yearbooks were distributed to 287 seniors.

“The families of both students have been contacted to offer a sincere apology and to assure them that a thorough investigation would be conducted,” Holton said Sunday.
