Police detained a man reportedly armed with a gun on a West Long Beach rooftop and called off SWAT search for another man at the same building early Tuesday moing.
Officers were dispatched around 6 a.m. to the area of Canal Avenue and Cowles Street to a call of “a subject on a roof armed with a gun,” said Sgt. Bradley Johnson, a police spokesman, in an email. Police detained the man at the scene and recovered a weapon. The exact type of weapon was not disclosed.
During their investigation, police came to believe that a second man was inside the building who had an active arrest warrant for a weapons charge, Johnson said. Officers also believed that the second man had a weapon with him and requested a SWAT team to respond to a possible barricaded subject.
Eventually, police found that the arrest warrant wasn’t valid anymore and that the man was not inside the building, he said. SWAT was called off.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
