A group of ducklings without a mother were rescued near a North Long Beach storm water pump station and are now being cared for by Long Beach Animal Care Services.
Jim Agnello, a Long Beach Public Works employee found the group of five ducklings while inspecting the pump station near Artesia Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue Friday afteoon, said Art Cox, street maintenance supervisor for Public Works. Agnello became conceed and looked for the mother, but she could not be found. The ducklings, in the meantime, began to follow him around.
Pump stations pose a threat to ducklings, which can be sucked inside and killed, Cox said.
Agnello called Long Beach Animal Care Services, which sent persoel out to retrieve the ducklings, he said. This is the third or fourth incident in which a public works employee has come across ducklings separated from their mother near a pump station.
