Long Beach Unified, Port of Long Beach to start new international trade program

Cabrillo High School students who live in the shadow of the Port of Long Beach – one of the world’s busiest seaports – will have an opportunity next year to start on a path that could lead to a career in the harbor.

The Global Logistics Academy at Cabrillo is a four-year pathway for entering freshmen who want to pursue a career in inteational trade and global logistics. Students will gain real world experiences in the classroom through job shadowing, workplace tours, and guest speakers.

Port education

“Students at Cabrillo are in the port’s backyard. They live and breath the port,” said Noelia Rodriguez, Port of Long Beach’s managing director for govement relations. “It’s this big, mysterious place. It’s there, but you don’t know how it works.

“This pathway to a career at the port will give students an inside look to see how it operates on a global and local level,” she said. “Employees can foster the next generation of port leaders and workforce members, giving Cabrillo students a chance at seeing a future for themselves that they might not have expected.”

New Academy

The pre-existing Cabrillo Academy of Business will be re-designed for the global logistics and inteational trade theme and have a soft admission opening in September before its grand launch for the 2017-2018 academic year, said Renee Shipman, LBUSD’s Linked Leaing Mentor District Coordinator.

The academy will join other pathways already in place at Cabrillo in the fields of law and justice, health and engineering.

After Cabrillo

Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach also have global logistics and inteational trade programs, so Cabrillo graduates will be able to continue their education at either of those colleges.

“We want to support our students, so after high school they can go to a college and have a career,” Shipman said. “It’s a streamlined process.”
