Family asks for help finding man who went missing on his way to Long Beach

The sister of a 63-year-old man who went missing last week as he was being transported from a Westwood hospital to a care facility in Long Beach is asking for the public’s help.

Deloris Farmer said her brother, Andrew La Mont Farmer, went missing around 10:30 p.m. May 19. He was released around 9:10 p.m. from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center after being treated for a seizure he suffered earlier that day. Hospital staff reportedly put him in a taxi bound for 1012 Locust Ave. in Long Beach, but he never arrived.

Andrew Farmer was living with his sister in Carson as of last week.

“The hospital chose to send him (there) because I could not pick him up as I am caregiver for our mother and he was still very disoriented and confused,” Farmer said, in an email. “He was unable to answer simple questions correctly such as the year, he said 1953; the month, he said March; and his income, he said 50 cents.”

Andrew Farmer has lived in Northe Califoia for the last decade and is not familiar with the Long Beach area, his sister said in an email. He is about 5-foot-8 and weighs about 130 pounds. He is missing the tip of his right index finger and has visible scarring across the top of his head, ear to ear, from an operation to remove a brain tumor several years ago.

“He has mental issues (ever since the tumor was removed) and needs medication to control seizures, anxiety and other issues,” she said.

Andrew Farmer did not have a phone or identification on him when he was discharged, his sister said. He was last seen wearing hospital-issued navy blue sweatpants and a navy blue sweatshirt or T-shirt.

Bellflower sighting

Farmer said a minister who saw one of several missing person fliers she left in the area called and told her he saw Andrew Farmer Sunday around 1:30 p.m. at Bellflower Boulevard and Ramona Street in Bellflower.

“Her description makes our family pretty sure it was him ... she described (Andrew’s) complexion as being ‘grayish,’ which indicates he’s not taking his meds or drinking water,” Deloris Farmer said. “She described him as looking confused as to which way he was going to go. I am sure he is trying to find something that is familiar to him. He has literally sat less than a block from my home, for hours, because he couldn’t find his way back.”

Family believes Andrew Farmer may be trying to get back to his home in Madera, Califoia, or to Deloris’ home in Carson.

“He is harmless but is easily agitated, especially when he caot express what he wants to say,” Deloris Farmer said.

The Long Beach Police Department is investigating Farmer’s disappearance but does not consider it a critical missing case, said Marlene Arrona, a police spokeswoman, in an email.
