Back in more dependable and predictable days, we could climb way up on our liberal high horse and throw down a mess of anti-right-wing truths and facts and then sit back and watch the Mailbag fill up with sputtering rage and vituperative missives, which we’d just toss at our inte to type up and we’d have a whole nother column done just like that.
A lot of these correspondences included the statement, “Well, you’ve lost another subscriber,” and apparently they weren’t lyin’, because lately when we’ve been baiting whatever it is you call Donald Trumpers (they need a name because just as Tea Partyers have made old-school conservatives look like leftists, Trump supporters make us yea for the days of Tea Partyers because even though the TP’ers swerved drunkenly across lanes with their right-tu signals perpetually on, they at least knew more-or-less the direction they wanted to travel), we haven’t caught us any lunkers.
Could be some righteous reasons for their silence, the most painful and financially crippling being they have indeed dropped their subscriptions to the paper and just spend their days now cuddled in the warm embrace of Fox, Breitbart and Drudge. Or maybe they’re just slow readers and/or bad typers and their notes will appear a few days hence, useless in delay.
The closest to cavilling over our most recent Trump column was Frank McEnulty, the New American Independent Party nominee in the 2008 presidential election (he didn’t win). The Long Beach businessman writes, “You bemoaned the fact that in this country it is hard to believe that the GOP has ended up with Trump. I’m not going to argue with you, but suggest that the same could be said of Hillary and Beie.” That’s fair enough. Given the choices, McEnulty feels wee bit of a Be. “While I disagree with a lot of what he says he wants to do, and a lot of what he says he wants to do is not practical, I believe I can at least trust what he says.”
Our well educated friend from Wilson High, Wes Edwards (further liberally educated at Cal Berkeley), lays it out without flinching. “A lot of my somewhat intelligent Trump-voter friends are probably more prone to vote for him for a single, more profound reason: Obama-hate,” he writes. “They know how terrible Trump is sounding and looking as a potential president, but they don’t care. They simply hate Obama more than letting little issues like experience, intelligence, honesty and character matter.”
Still Edwards, apparently, has had enough. “After I write my thank-you letter to President Obama for providing us with our most significant leader in my lifetime, I will peacefully bow out of the political process.”
Tuing to another great Chicago product, Phillip Wachovsky, after reading our column about new businesses coming to Bixby Knolls, mous the demise of Mustard’s Chicago Style Hotdogs on Atlantic, making room for Hashtag Burgers.
“Mustard’s was a joy, especially to those of us from the Midwest, particularly Chicago,” he writes.

“This passing will be a sad moment.
“So, a new hamburger joint will be taking its place,” he notes without enthusiasm. “What a thrill.”
