Man killed in Compton double shooting identified

COMPTON >> The coroner’s office Monday released the name of a man killed in a shooting in which another man was wounded.

He was 18-year-old Martin Mendiola of Compton, according to coroner’s Lt. Larry Dietz.

The shooting occurred at 10:50 p.m. Friday, in the 300 block of West Raymond Street, according to Deputy Mike Barraza.

The victim now identified as Mendiola was pronounced dead at the scene, Barraza said.

The other man was wounded and taken to a hospital for treatment.

A motive for the double shooting was unknown. But witnesses told deputies the two men were standing on the sidewalk on Raymond Street when another man approached them, Schrader said. They talked for a while and then the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the two men in the chest several times. The suspect then ran west on Raymond Street.

No suspect description was available.
