Bars and hip restaurants are all well and good, but downtown Long Beach families with small children can have something of their own to look forward to since construction of a new playground is scheduled to begin soon.
A groundbreaking event for what Long Beach officials call the Promenade Square Park Tot Lot is set for Saturday, according to City Hall. Playground plans include a slide, rocks and other structures for children to climb on, a park bench and safety surfacing.
City govement’s $192,000 budget for the new playground includes $75,000 from the office of 2nd District Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal, $20,000 directed by Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, $10,000 from Downtown Long Beach Associates, $7,300 from the Promenade Area Residents Association and $5,000 from the Molina Family Trust.
The groundbreaking event is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the future playground site, which is near the intersection of East First Street and The Promenade North.
