Long Beach was named 10th most bike friendly city in the nation, according to a survey by Active.com, an athletic event website.

The survey looked at the percent of commuters who bike to work, bicycle commute times, miles of protected bike lanes and bicycle storage facilities.

“The national recognition we have received for our investments in bike infrastructure is fantastic,” Mayor Robert Garcia said in a statement.

In a press release, the city touted its “livability initiatives,” including bike infrastructure, increased walkability downtown and improved water quality in marinas and walkways.

The city also added 14 recharge stations, which consist of public “fix it” stations and a water fountain, that have been installed throughout town for bicyclists.

The recharge stations were funded by a state grant, except the stations along the coast, which were funded by the Tidelands Capital Budget, which is supported by the City’s share of oil revenue and is restricted to projects along the coast.
