Man who prompted Long Beach officer-involved shooting is arraigned on multiple charges

A Bellflower man accused of exhibiting a deadly weapon to a police officer – prompting an officer-involved shooting Feb. 10 and subsequent search of a Central Long Beach neighborhood – was arraigned Wednesday on multiple charges.

Cory Jamal Boyce, 28, has been charged with criminal counts including resisting an executive officer, burglary and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Boyce did not enter a plea Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court; his hearing was continued to Thursday.

He is being held at Los Angeles County Jail without bail.

Police earlier released the following account of what happened:

Officers saw a vehicle make a traffic violation in the 2100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, and tried to make a traffic stop. The driver stopped quickly, and Boyce exited the vehicle with a handgun in his hand and ran.

At one point he stopped ruing and tued toward officers with the gun in his hand, police said, adding that witnesses saw what happened. An officer fired a shot but no one was struck. Boyce ran away again, still armed with the handgun, hopping over multiple fences.

The driver of the vehicle also fled the scene. Police set up a perimeter as they searched for both men.

About an hour later, officers assisting on the call saw an altercation on the porch of a residence in the 1000 block of E. 21st Street involving a man they believed could be Boyce.

Officers arrested Boyce and he was positively identified shortly after.

Police determined Boyce entered the residence through a side door and was immediately confronted by the occupants who were in fear for their safety. The altercation officers saw was a physical struggle to get Boyce out of the house.

The gun was later found by detectives within the area where he was last seen ruing, police said. Officers were also able to locate the vehicle and the driver in the 400 block of N. Willow Avenue in Compton.

The car was impounded and the driver was interviewed by detectives before being released.
