Your weekend events: Country, classical or underwater

We’ve got a busy weekend plaed with activities that will prevent us from accidentally going to Saturday’s ShipKicker Country Music Festival at the Queen Mary Events Park. We’ve got a high tolerance for country music, but it’s not extraordinarily high, and it slams into a wall when it comes to sweet little love songs, which, after a brief and painful sampling of the headliners, is what you’re going to get a lot of at ShipKicker.

But, please, don’t let our affinity for shattered romance and whiskey bottles affect your decision. You go on and go ahead and go. It’s from 1 to 11 p.m. and your headliner is Easton Corbin, who you might know had a hit with “Lovin’ You Is Fun.” Merle is spiing in his grave already.

Tickets are $55 for general admission, $110 for VIP admission and another $25 gets you into a meet and greet with Corbin. Undercarders Clare Du and Dylan Scott can be met and greeted for $20 each.

Symphony season finale

At the upper end of the classiness scale, you can be treated to a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony at the closing concert of Long Beach Symphony’s 81st season Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Terrace Theater.

On the 88s will be award-wiing guest pianist Natasha Paremski.

Also performed by the symphony will be Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5 and Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Tickets start at $20.

Another First for the Knolls

We swear these First Fridays in Bixby Knolls come around every other week. Not since Pope Gregory XIII has anyone rejiggered the calendar as much as Knolls boss Blair Cohn.

Tonight’s FF starts, as always, at 6:30, featuring events going on at the bizzes on Atlantic between Bixby Road and San Antonio Drive.

Highlights this time will be a tribute to Prince by MOVE. Sick jumprope skills by Jump LA, free s’mores on Atlantic at Roosevelt Road, hair painting at Medusa, and music and art everywhere.

Take a dive

If you spend any time at all underwater, you know that there’s not a lot of air to breathe down there. Solution: Scuba!

The always popular aual Scuba Show comes to the Long Beach Convention Center Saturday and Sunday, with hundreds of exhibits ranging from dive gear to spectacular scubacations, along with a raft of seminars.
