Mercedes-Benz donates 350 electric vehicle chargers to Long Beach

Long Beach residents and businesses could receive one of 350 electric vehicle chargers recently donated by Mercedes-Benz USA to the City Council.

The chargers are expected to be made available early next year at no cost to qualifying businesses and residents, according to the city. The chargers are “Level 2,” compatible with 240-volt electrical outlets. They typically deliver a full charge in six hours or less, but are not built to withstand the elements and will need to be installed in garages or under covered parking.

In January 2017, new building codes will require new buildings constructed in Long Beach to include a higher proportion of parking spaces that are “EV ready” or able to easily accommodate charging stations.

“We’re very grateful to Mercedes-Benz for this generous donation, which will encourage more residents to drive electric vehicles and help reduce our carbon footprint,” said Mayor Robert Garcia, in a statement. “Long Beach is committed to being one of the most sustainable cities in the country, and this is a great step in that direction.”

City officials estimate there are 1,200 electric vehicles in Long Beach and that about 20 more hit the streets every month. City staff plan to develop a program to distribute the charging stations to properties that have the types of electrical upgrades necessary for the charger.
