Long Beach election results: Incumbents lead in state, federal races

Incumbent lawmakers and a host of challengers are tangling in Tuesday’s primary.

The open primary system in Califoia races calls for the two candidates with most votes in a given race to face off in the November general election. Voters approved the new system in 2010, when they passed Proposition 14.

Here’s a rundown of the results so far:

47th Congressional

Ruing for his third term in the 47th Congressional District, Rep. Alan Lowenthal , D-Long Beach, is out front with 68 percent of the vote, while Republican challenger Andy Whallon, a former aeronautical engineer whom Lowenthal defeated in 2014, is in second place in the primary, with nearly 19 percent of the vote, according to Los Angeles County elections officials. Republican Sanford Kahn has nearly 13 percent of the vote.

The 47th Congressional District includes parts of Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, Avalon, Buena Park, Cypress, Garden Grove, Los Alamitos, Midway City, Stanton, Rossmoor and Westminster.

Lowenthal is a veteran of the state Assembly and Senate, and was first elected to office in 1992 as a member of the Long Beach City Council. He defeated Whallon with 56 percent of the vote in 2014. Whallon eaed 54,309 of the 123,400 votes in the November general election, which encouraged to the challenger to take on Lowenthal again.

70th Assembly

In the 70th Assembly District — which includes the cities of Long Beach, Signal Hill San Pedro as well as Catalina Island — incumbent Patrick O’Doell, D-Long Beach, a former Long Beach city councilman, is seeking a second term. The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk shows 14,161 votes for the incumbent, but the elections officials have not posted vote tallies for two other candidates, both of whom are write-ins — Democrat Billy Graham and Republican Martha Flores-Gibson,

The district includes communities in Long Beach, San Pedro and Signal Hill.

63rd Assembly

In the 63rd Assembly District, incumbent Anthony Rendon, D-Paramount, who also serves as Speaker, faces a challenge from Republican Adam Joshua Miller. The district includes communities in the Lakewood, Paramount and South Gate areas.

According to elections officials, Rendon leads the primary early, with more than 70 percent of the vote.

33rd State Senate

The 33rd State Senate District includes much of Long Beach as well as communities in the Paramount and Huntington park areas. Incumbent Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens has 15,051 votes. The tally for write-in opponent Honor Mimi Robson, a Libertarian, has not been posted.

35th Senate

State Sen. Isadore Hall, D-Compton, is vacating his seat in the 35th District for a congressional run. Four candidates are vying for the spot. In early voting Tuesday, Democrats Steven Bradford and Warren Furutani lead, with 35.27 percent of the vote, and 23.99 percent of the vote, respectively. The district includes Compton, Wilmington and Inglewood.
