Signaling their support for the transgender community, Los Angeles City Council members Mitch O’Farrell, Mike Bonin and Nury Martinez submitted a motion this week asking City Attoey Mike Feuer’s office to update city laws to allow transgender persons to use bathrooms in city parks based on their gender identity.
The motion will be heard at a yet to be determined date in the Council’s Arts, Parks, and Los Angeles River committee, which is chaired by O’Farrell.
The move comes amid a national debate on transgender rights.
The Obama administration in May ordered all public school districts to allow transgender students to use the restroom that matches their gender identity.
Several states are suing over the law.
