3 on side of 405 Freeway killed by car in Carson

CARSON — Three men standing outside vehicles following a crash were fatally struck by a car on the San Diego (405) Freeway in Carson today, shutting down the freeway for hours, and a man was arrested on suspicion of DUI in coection with the accident, the Califoia Highway Patrol reported.

The men who were all pronounced dead at the scene were in their mid-20s to mid-30s, authorities said. The multi-faceted accident occurred at around 1 a.m. on the northbound 405 north of South Wilmington Avenue.

CHP officials said that a Toyota Prius struck a Chevy Silverado pulling a trailer, causing the Silverado to hit a freeway wall. Both vehicles stopped on the freeway, at which point an Uber driver pulled over and its passenger got out to offer help, authorities said.

A Toyota Camry then careened into the Uber passenger and two people who had been in the Silverado, killing all three, they said.

The driver of the Prius was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to the CHP.

The freeway was reopened at about 5:30 a.m.
