Long Beach police investigating 2 North Long Beach shootings

NORTH LONG BEACH >> Long Beach police are investigating two unrelated shootings that happened in North Long Beach Friday evening and early Saturday.

The first shooting happened just after 6 p.m. Friday near Orizaba Avenue and 65th Street, said Sgt. Bradley Johnson, a police spokesman, in an email. Officers were dispatched at 6:05 p.m. to a report of a non-hit shooting, which they determined was related to an armed robbery that happened shortly before.

A man was at a gas station near Paramount Boulevard and Candlewood Street in Lakewood near the border with Long Beach when he was approached by two suspects who robbed him at gunpoint, Johnson said. They asked for jewelry and cash before speeding away in a vehicle. The victim followed after them in his car.

The victim chased the suspects to Orizaba Avenue and 65th Street where they stopped, got out of their vehicle and fired shots at him, he said. Numerous shell casings were recovered at the scene but the victim was not hit.

The shooting is being investigated as possibly gang-related.

The second shooting happened at 2:35 a.m. Saturday, Johnson said. Officers responded to a shots call in the 200 block of Hullet Street and found two victims suffering gunshot wounds to their lower torsos.

The victims were transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries, he said. The second shooting is also being investigated as possibly gang-related.
