San Gabriel Complex fires 10% contained, some Duarte residents allowed to return home

More than 1,400 firefighters continued to fight twin fires in the San Gabriel Mountains near Duarte and Azusa on Wednesday after the fires had scorched 4,900 acres since Monday.

The two fires, referred to as the San Gabriel Complex fires, are now 10 percent contained. No structures have been damaged by either fire.

The first fire ignited Monday near Morris Dam after a fatal car crash on Highway 39. Called the Reservoir fire, it has bued 1,200 acres. The other fire, known as the Fish fire, started near Fish Canyon in Duarte and has bued 3,700 acres. The cause of the Fish fire remains under investigation.

Officials aounced Wednesday moing that some Duarte residents in more than 500 homes, who previously had to evacuate, could retu home. Residents who live north of Royal Oaks Drive, east of Greenback and West El Encanto Parkway, will be allowed to retu around noon. Other residents in Duarte and Azusa who have already been evacuated can not yet retu home, officials said.

Authorities said the reason for not allowing more residents retu home was due to the need to keep roads clear in case they need to quickly react to changes in the fire.

For those residents who still caot retu home, a community meeting is plaed at 7 p.m. at Northview Middle School, 1401 Highland Avenue, Duarte. The meeting is for both Azusa and Duarte residents.

There is no estimated date of containment for the twin fires at this point, officials said. There are 1,404 firefighters and suppoer persoel assigned to the fire, 212 fire engines, 12 helicopters, 18 hand crews, eight bulldozers and other resources, officials said.
