Suspect in Bellflower standoff charged with attempted murder of 10 sheriff's deputies

A Burbank man who allegedly shot and wounded two Los Angeles Sheriff’s deputies was accused Tuesday of trying to murder ten deputies before a nearly eight-hour standoff in Bellflower Thursday, prosecutors aounced.

Juan Manuel Martinez, 39, is due to be arraigned today at the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Bellflower.

Prosecutors plan to ask that his bail be set at $11 million, according to the Los Angeles County District Attoey’s office.

Martinez was charged with a total of 13 felony counts, including 10 counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, one felony count each of false imprisonment of a hostage, dissuading a witness by threat of force and possession of a firearm by a felon, prosecutors said in a statement.

Martinez discharged a firearm causing “great bodily injury” to two deputies, according to the complaint.

Martinez is accused of shooting and wounding a motorcycle deputy who had pulled him over during a DUI checkpoint on Lakewood Boulevard. After leaving his vehicle, he allegedly “fired on four other deputies” who arrived to assist the wounded deputy, prosecutors said.

Martinez then allegedly wounded another deputy when he fired at another set of deputies before hiding in a small structure for almost eight hours. He was arrested after a SWAT team fired tear gas to oust him from the structure.

Martinez, if convicted, faces up to life in state prison, according to prosecutors.
