Long Beach police shoot suspect, K9 injured near Orizaba Park

Long Beach police officers’ search for man wanted on suspicion of an assault with a deadly weapon culminated in an officer-involved shooting in the city’s Zaferia area.

A suspect has been taken to a hospital for medical care, according to police department spokeswoman Marlene Arrona. There was no immediate statement as to that person’s condition.

No Long Beach officers sustained any injuries during the shooting, although a police K9 sustained an unspecified injury during the incident and was taken away from the scene for veterinary care.

Arrona reported the shooting about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Long Beach police officers investigating the assault with a deadly weapon case about 9 a.m. Tuesday were focused on an apartment complex in the 2800 block of East 15th Street, where officers believed the suspect was located.

Police later established a perimeter around an area that includes Orizaba Park. The perimeter was bounded by 16th Street to the north, Orizaba Avenue to the west, 14th Street to the south and Temple Avenue to the west.

Police aounced the perimeter about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, advising people to avoid the area.
