Long Beach representatives call for community conversation on gun violence

LONG BEACH >> Congressman Alan Lowenthal will be in Long Beach today to talk with community members about gun-violence prevention in the wake of the worst mass shooting in mode U.S. history.

The call for a conversation about sensible gun reform comes two weeks after a massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, where a gunman killed 49 people and wounded 53 more.

Congressional representatives are holding similar forums across the state and throughout the nation today on what is being touted as a Nationwide Day of Action.

The Long Beach event is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the City Hall Plaza, located at 333 W. Ocean Blvd..

The movement is being organized by House Democrats, who recently participated in a 26 hour sit-in on the floor of the House of Representatives calling for a vote on common-sense gun legislation.

Lowenthal, who represents 13 cities in Los Angeles and Orange counties, including Long Beach, Lakewood and Signal Hill, is asking community members to come out and share their thoughts on the issue.

Representatives from gun safety and legislation advocacy groups, Brady Campaign and Moms Demand Action, will likely be in attendance at the forum, as will Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia.
